I have a love hate realationship with this film to be honest. DragonRider is my most favorite book and when I heard it was going to be a film. I was excited that my favorite book was going to get the attention it deserved. But that son changed when I finally watched it. I was disappointed what I watched and what I learned about the film. Watching it, I was having that nostalgia remember reading the book, and not to mention the casting I thought was a little weird. But the thing that made me sad and disappointed was the advertisement they did, using the HTTYD font to grab viewers, so that means they were not confident with the film or wanted to be sneaky about it. Ben as a character was very unlikeable, selfish and just did not want him in the film. Twiglegs redemption was just awful, rushed and no heart. Firedrake was very… bland and naive, which is sad since he is my favorite character in the book. Gravelbeard was just annoying through out the film, not in the least funny, joined Nettlebrand cause he wanted to be evil, and not have a gold scale cause that was the point why he tagged along in the first place. The only characters they somewhat got right was Sorrel, Professor Greenbloom, and Nettlebrand. I was wanting Sorrel just to get rid of Ben the whole time, and I’m not gonna lie, the fetch a match scene with the online dating was pretty funny and adorable but that’s not enough to save the film. They didn’t keep to the lore of the dragons flying either so that was just… not surprising. And when I learn they didn’t let the Author Cornelia Funke help with the film, it made so much sense why this film failed. So watch I if you are curious but only once cause it’s not worth watching a second time.
