So, I picked up this book expecting some kind of gritty, deep dive into the heart of the American underbelly. Instead, I got a self-indulgent, whine-fest from a guy who apparently thinks he's a modern McCarthy.
Vance constantly boasts about overcoming adversity, but it reads more like a humblebrag than a heartfelt confession. It's like he's trying to sell us a self-help book disguised as a memoir. This book is a self-indulgent whine-fest. Offensive caricaturesque portrayal of of the Appalachian people.
This guy's version of the American Dream is as fake as a Trump University diploma.
