Many who have commented here seem to not realize this series is based on a highly researched and very long book written by Jon Krakauer almost two decades ago. His book is about this killing but more so about the origins of the Mormon church, Joseph Smith and the tragic massacre. I highly recommend reading his book. It's eye opening for someone like myself who grew up with many friends who were and still are part of the LDS church. The author grew up in a similar community as I did which from prior interviews I've read, peaked his interest in the LDS church. Push this off to the fragments of the LDS church, FDLS etc. as you like but the basis of the religion represented is accurate for the time period and in many ways now.
