Great movie, let down again by Judy Dench's Belfast accent. Sounded more West country. It was the same in Chocolate, the French accent was just as uncomfortable to watch. And she and the director's know it. In both film, gone is the strong performance of the middle/upper class woman, which she always delivers on in her costume drama and period roles. But this meek woman, with not a lot to say for herself for fear of the "unhidable" typical BBC English accent, may show through. And it did.
A case I think of keep her in and don't give her much to say. There are plenty of Irish actors out there of her age that would have brought so much more to the role. Her character was not a true representation of women of her age born and raised in Northern Ireland at that time . The film was strong enough without her, unfortunately being a "national treasure" nobody wants to admit that even Dame Judy Dench too, has limits..
