Being from a country, (Canada), that was allied with Britain during WWII, I have always admired the backboned nature of its people. This film exemplifies this noble trait. Upon reading some of the reviews, it is evident that many are ideologically driven and refuse to be entertained, unless and until the subject matter conforms to their preexisting world view. I think a story about a confused young boy who feels abandoned, juxtaposed against the guilt and despair of his distraught mother is worthy enough for me.

I was on the fence prior to seeing the film, attracted by the cast, but repeled by the ongoing shenanigans of that institution. I am glad I went, as the acting was top notch, as expected, and the plot, riveting.

This short dramatic film was enjoyable and has such potential to be expanded into a series.

Americans aren't generally shy about highlighting their cultural achievements, of which sports has always been a major part. This is the reason that I am surprised that such a major accomplishment is not better known and celebrated. Whether or not the 8 man rowing team and their coxswain really experienced all of the pitfalls presented to them, it doesn't really detract from the rarefied air they all end up breathing. Being from working class families, trying desperately to earn a college degree in the throes of the Great Depression is enough of a challenge for any individual or group to surmount. Their story is touching and well-told and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. George Clooney is also a masterful Director. This film certainly exceeded my expectations and I am fairly certain that many other attendees will say the same.

I thought that I was sitting through a serially manipulative cigarette commercial. If there is a cultural uptake in the tobacco habit, the purveyors will know where their gratitude resides. There was a creative dance sequence near the beginning of the film and a lovely orchestral piece performed inside a cathedral about three quarters of the way through, but they were the highlights for me. Even though I enjoy listening to Mr. Bernstein's music, the message I received is that genius and talent transcend everything, and if one has those attributes, the person is permitted to treat others as conveniences and accessories.

The movie had elements of both 'Cocoon' and 'ET' within it. The uncomfortable realities of the aging process are also explored. It is not a wasted evening by any stretch.
