Brilliant performances from Riz Ahmed and Paul Raci. However the film politicizes approaches to hearing loss. Cochlear implants ARE covered by insurance, and they are a Godsend for many of the hearing impaired. Raci's character even says that the deaf community doesn't consider deafness a handicap. They consider it a culture. Which may be true if you are born deaf and have never had hearing. But adult-onset deafness is devastating. Even Ray Charles could see that - literally - he left money in his will for the education of the deaf, as he felt that deafness was far more of a handicap than blindness. Beautiful film, but ultimately somewhat depressing.
