I first learned of Poe's work while taking a required literature course in college. I'm so grateful that our educators had the wisdom to make certain courses a requirement! Would I have freely elected to take the course on my own; probably not. Thank goodness because this and many other "Fine Arts courses" that enriches my life today would have been missed and I would be intellectually poorer!
Poe and Frost have my greatest interest...I am not an elite observer on the topic of poetry..
As to "The Raven", I can feel the atmosphere in his room, the late night hour, a chilling ambience creating a mood, for his musings and reflections on life as he sat alone pondering, wondering, and wearily nodding. And I suppose, as he was known to be an alcoholic, that would have certainly had a bearing on his thoughts as he penned his descriptive words..
I doubt that many would agree with me about anything that would suggest that there is something good to be gained from words symptomatically dark yet sensitive and creative coming from the mind of an alcoholic but that would be a mistake!
