Kevin Henkes is a talented author and I have enjoyed some of his books. This book did great describing summer as the color "green" and went on to describe things you do in the summer. At the end it transitions by reiterating summer is still always like the color green (which I liked since it is good for young reader's reading comprehension and exposure to writing styles), then explains when summer gets bored, it transitions to something new (being the fall season). I hated giving a talented author 3 stars but it did not keep my daughter's attention or interest. It might be better as a circle time or group project book for Pre-K and Kindergarten. While it did show the talent of an experienced author, I do not feel like it was close to his best work.

I read multiple books to my toddler every day and participate in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Pledge Program, so actively seek out new, fun, educational, exciting books for us to try and see this one on list recommended all the time. It's on list with Alice Schertle's Little Blue Truck series and Eric Carles's endless classics like The Hungry Caterpillar, The Tiny Seed, The Foolish Tortoise and so many amazing more. This book has no theme or plot, it's not funny or cute, it doesn't teach a moral, idea or theme, it's not educational with vocabulary-expanding words or rhyming important to development of non- , beginning or emergent readers. The story is boring and pointless, it goes on too long about nothing and the illustrations are terrible and not age-appropriate, in my opinion. Don't waste your money, or your child or student's time.
