Along with an all star cast of outstanding character actors who would become legendary in their own right, this tale of US Navy submariners brings to life the battles of the fleet in the Pacific theater as it takes on the imposing naval might of the dreaded Japanese Empire. No C/G special effects to drive the action here. This is simply a SUPERBLY acted well crafted MASTERPEICE. The pre- curssor of 'Crimson Tide'. For those who don't enjoy the nostalgia of the black and white classics, they still show Sesamee Street in color. Hope this was helpful...

Just saw this for the first time after hearing all the praise given over the years. I am an avid lover of period movies and since I remember that period very well, I think I can give an honest opinion. While it does reflect the time, it seems to also reflect the mass confusion of alot of movies which were thrown together during that time. It was a dare to be different era. So many of the counter culture films of that time seem to be all over the place and depending on your state of mind and your drug of choice, this may or may not get it. I don't think it holds up well and quite frankly I don't see how this won an Oscar. I do think Hoffmans performance was Oscar worthy and he probably could have won if the movie hadn't been all over the place. All the strange sequenced flashbacks seem to be something only the director could've explained as the smoke and 'H' was being freely shared at a film wrap party. In any case the movie deserves to be watch and discussed as a clear reflection of that time.

Great picture. Doris Day is wonderfully cast. Beautiful and possibly her best singing performance. Absolutely perfect. The great gruff and tough Cam Mitchel we all got to know and love thru his countless western and cop tv roles and movies. Almost hard to imagine him as the piano playing orchestral love interest. And lest we not forget, the magnificent as always, James Cagney. Although he may be type cast here, he is the master of the maniacal tough guy as witnessed in films such as,'The Public Enemy, 'Angels With Dirty Faces' and the villanous 'Cody Jarret' in 'White Heat'. He is truly the blue print for characters like the villans of 'What's Love Got To Do With It' and even 'Star 80 or The Dorthy Stratton Story'...( see these pictures for references). Cagney's performance is certainly Oscar worthy and possibly a little too close to home for the time period of Academy voters. (reference Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, or even Doris Day's own personal story and a host of studio system starlets from the early days of stage and screen right up to the scandals of today. In any case this is a film classic and should be viewed as such. It deserves it's place as such so enjoy it. Hope this was helpful.

Just finished episodes 4 and 5 as I'm trying to keep an open mind thinking that for the genre, this would get better. Again I find myself bored stiff as the episodes pack alot of cultural and heritage interest which is good but it lacks the action and fun of a teen super hero show. I will give it a few more and hope there is more added to the central character and story to make me even care about whether it's on or not. To put it simply, I prefer Raising Dion to this and they took it off. I was so interested and entertained by the little boy and his quest to understand and control his powers and still deal with the nuances of being a child. I couldn't wait to see the next episode. Plesse bring that back and, ho hum, I hope this gets better.

No character developement whatsoever!!! Fast food chain depictation of a real life Icon. Anyone who thought this would be the story that would finally take you into the life of the "King of Rock & Roll" will be highly dissapointed. This is the most highly glossed over super speed version of the story which is ELVIS. Believe me, the latter statement is such an oxymoron because this dribble is waaaaaay too long. If you are a true Elvis fan, be prepared to be commatose for 2hr and 40 mins. Ocassionally you will get the paddles to jumpstart your jucies. Sadly though these moments come too infrequently and far between performances. The lead character as Elvis is competant but there is not enough of a sustained focus given to any of his performances. Everthing is rushed and slickly packaged like bubble gum. No time is ever spent showing us what truely made his performances legendary. Go back and referance biopics like Ray, Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Coal Miners Daughter... you will immediately see what's wrong with this movie. In fact, this movie could have easily been renamed, "Snake Oil" , for the character who annoyingly narrates this movie. OMG... what to say about Tom Hanks. He is a well respected 2x oscar winner. In this he is oddly comical but just as awful as any Will Farrel performance you have ever seen. Is this what he is going for or I don't know... In any case, the accent, the greasy mannerisms and over actted performance left me straight faced and constantly wishing he would dissapear. Since he is the movies second lead... enough said! If you are young and don't know about Elvis, you would do better to google an episode of E's True Hollywood Story or the documentary entitled, " ELVIS, The Rise and Fall of the King". I think you would be better served than to sit thru this too long, uniformative, unimaginative and surely overhyped drudge. I didn't even go into the inclusion of RAP music in a period biopic. Oh , did I say Rap music... yes I did. Guess it was supposed to move certain scenes along in a movie that already speeds thru nescessary moments of inclusion that should have taken more time to let the audience savor essance of Elvis. It is my opinion that the young man who plays the lead is being wasted. As I said , he is very competant as Elvis... even great at times. There is just not given enough time to the performances to save this movie. Judge for yourself, but wait and watch it at home for free.

We are so bumed out about this series being canceled. "Raising Dion", is a show which shows a very realistic depiction of a solid relationship between a widowed afro american mother and her smart, intelligent, adorable afro american son. It's like "Julia" on steroids. For those too young to understand this reference, google the late Diane Carrol and not only read, but allow yourself to absorb her importance and the shows importance to the history of american television and the afro american experience in the genre. Finally a feel good show representing an oft forgotten and overlooked segment of the fragmented nuclear family which is the new american norm. Easily " Raising Dion" certainly had the appeal to cross into the so called, " main stream audience". I think it's young star and the inclusion of children from all backgrounds which includes an adorable special needs female was such a welcome. To make her such a strong willed unrelenting source to the lead was genius and well overdue. I know Netflix is in the midst of financial restructuring, but it would be such ashamed for the ball to be dropped on this show. We need an Oprah or a Tyler Perry to step in with their vast resources and get with Michael B. Jordan and save this fan favorite. There are other networks where this can continue to live in our hearts. Please save this show. I urge you to write to the people mentioned above after you watch and get to love this as my family and friends have. I hope this was usefull to you...
