Honest Review. 4/5 stars. Movie lost a star due to the missing explanation as to why the sun was dying.
But firstly I noticed After Darkness is not for people who needs the plot spoon fed to them. Its more like Watchmen or Melancholia. Sorry but it is what it is. And trust me because if you can't think critically enough, you will be LOST and clueless. However, if you're able to understand the little clues and snippets of information that guides the story then you will be fine. I'll give an example that alot of the people watching with me didn't understand.
(The daughter committed suicide after a falling out with her father. He was mean and inconsiderate of her situation. She ran out the house and the father told the wife to let her go. Turns out, the daughter went out to kill herself with poison berries.) This left everyone a little confused because no one knew what the argument was about to begin with. BUT, before that scene. The mom thought back about finding a positive pregnancy test in the bathroom. Hence here's the clue of the falling out. Abbey got pregnant at her age and the dad ain't take that very well.
Many hated the dad and for good reason (His attitude). However, this was a man who clawed his way up from nothing (hence the story of his father leaving him no inheritance.) He built his fortune and home from the ground up. The man was a strict and serious father/businessman. His human emotions was purposely withheld from everyone in order to not show weakness during their final days. Hence him having to go to the other room just to laugh instead of with everyone else. Also, as the son asked him, (when did you become so heartless and cruel to everyone?) Meaning, he was always a prick, but nowhere near the way he was now. Why? He stated multiple times throughout the movie, "Only the strongest can survive through these times." He was against jokes because laughter to him meant your not taking things seriously. His vision of strength is bold and emotionless. He decided to bare the secret of the caves so his family wouldn't be worried.
I saw the father and felt pity on him. He was played perfectly. That was a man of complete fear. The father was terrified. He did everything he could in order to keep his family close during their last days. Like he said, there NEVER was any caves. He was holding onto nothing the entire movie while he was giving his family something to focus on. He knew from the very beginning. He just needed a reason for his family to return home. Another example of him shielding his family from stresses of the end is when he saw what happened to the neighbors and said nothing. Also, he was the only one to know the food situation. He told no one that they didn't have any more food. But once the food and stuff ran out, he was forced to take other measures.
Oh yeah, in the end....they all died. Point blank there is no scenario where the sun came back. That last scene showed them in the afterlife.
The whole movie is indirect, the meaning. The plot, everything is a puzzle and the clues mainly present themselves once. However, I think I typed too much 😅 but there's lots more in the movie. I liked it.
