Just got out of the cinema and I wholeheartedly recommend. This movie is massively underrated and perfectly builds on the MCU (Minions Cinematic Universe), giving backstory to returning characters, allowing us to better understand the hopes and aspirations of each, so we form stronger emotional attachment and live through the emotions of the characters, all from the edge of our cinema seat.
I watched the movie in 3D, while that is not necessary it definitely makes the cinematic experience more immersive and adds realism to already astounding graphics.
The cinematography and authorial choices of this film are perfect and Balda really showed what he can do given a competent team and a good budget. All emotions are experienced during the film, from suspense to lust to awe to profound respect for the characters and their way of life.
This film brilliantly discusses the themes of the importance of teammates and friendship as well as perseverance and to keep working for your goals no matter what and no matter what others tell you. This is clearly shown (spoiler alert) when the leading character declares "It's morbin' time" despite not having the high ground.
The film empowers you to take action in your own life. As an example, it gave me the courage to make a move on the person I had been talking to and went to watch the film with.
All in all, Minions: The Rise of Gru is definitely the best film of 2022 and perhaps of the last 5 years, despite these years giving us other masterpieces such as Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2.
The only problem I found with this film is that it demands a lot from the audience, since formal wear such as suits, tuxedos or ball gowns are a requirement to enjoy the film fully. This is something I did not do, but will remember to do when I go watch it again for an even better experience, and I'm sure even more nuance and Easter eggs I missed the first time.
