If you are expecting a video game adaptation that follows the same plot in the video games we all know and love, long and takes time, same characterizations, same locations, same music, and original characters, then you are in for the biggest letdown. They changed and ruined Mario completely with this movie. All of the character’s personalities, particularly Peach, are different, they made Bowser the biggest simp which made the character completely cringy, and Peach just got turned into Lara Croft instead of the classic. The plot is also the most controversial choice in years, they made Luigi get captured by Bowser instead of Peach, a training course scene which if Mario succeed he would go with Peach, in which he didn’t but she still made him come, a Mario Kart scene which is a spin off series, not main, and was also pointless. They also made Toad, my favorite character, do nothing and just stayed there and talk. Donkey Kong was the most unfunny and annoying character in this movie, pretty much the entire movie was just him and Mario arguing like preschoolers. And Mario himself shouldn’t have been in this movie. You only see him get 2 power ups, being the Cat Bell and Tanooki Leaf, while Donkey Kong and Peach get the Fire Flower and Ice Flower. The worst thing about him is he didn’t even care for Peach, Toad, Donkey Kong, and the entire universe, Only cared for Luigi and his plumbing business. The pacing is extremely off and the film is extremely short, and they say it took forever to make. There was barely any Mario soundtrack either. Most of it was copyright songs and I only heard like 3 themes from the games. However, I do praise the voice actor performances, including Chris Pratt who did fantastic in both Italian and American accents. Anna Joy-Taylor, Keagan Michael-Key, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Seth Rogen all did very good jobs, despite how bad the characters were. Martinet of course nailed his two cameos as well. Other than that, this was the biggest disappointment for an adaptation in years after that awful 1993 film. For once, Rotten Tomatoes is actually right on a movie. I don’t understand why the audiences defend this movie, it is terrible despite being a huge of Mario for 11 years. It is better to watch Sonic the Hedgehog, Detective Pikachu, and Angry Birds instead, this film is nothing compared to those. And for those who haven’t seen it in theaters and intend on buying the DVD, DO NOT, it will be the biggest mistake of your life and my biggest mistake.
