One of the best Canadian books - pertinent still today yet written in the 1940’s. Every aspect of this story from the realities of the First World War, the divisions between French and English, the weather and terrain of our country is so expertly described. And then there is the character development. It’s so well developed, the reader finds allegiance ,affection and disturbance when getting to know them. My criticism lies in the final chapters of the book. The love story between Paul and Heather dragged out from my perspective. But overall I say it’s a must read.
