I like to start with the bad first. The plot is very meh. However, in 2021, that is not a sin in regards to movies that are money makers. The most disappointing part about this version was the fact that Shang Tsung, portrayed by Chin Han (You may remember him as the Chinese businessman who was laundering money for the mob in The Dark Knight) seems like he wants to be threatening but doesn't know how to be. In all fairness, I'm probably expecting too much because Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa absolutely owned that role in the 1995 version and it would be hard to beat. The winning ingredients to this movie included the main fight scene between Sub-Zero and Scorpion which was very satisfying to watch. It was absolutely worth it and makes up for the mediocre plot. Overall this version definitely covers for the few shortfalls that were found in the original movie as far as character depth and fighting action is concerned. This movie won't impress your date but if you and your buddies are stoned and want something to watch, this will pass.
