I'm surprised at how popular this book is. After hearing about it from a lot of sources, I decided to give it a try. But I really struggled to finish it. It felt like a really amateur novel. The characters are very one-dimensional, with their one characteristic (ex. bell-hopping) being brought up in every single interaction and comment about them. There was also very little growth for any character except the main one. The plot was very predictable, and most of the dialogue added little to nothing to the story and felt very contrived, unnatural or predictable (like always with a tone of violence, or always referencing the character's weight. After the 20th time, it all got old). Also, it was strange how absolutely everyone (coworkers, neighbours, random acquaintances, his cat) was slightly mean, or rude, or demeaning to the main character, even though they know nothing about him and he's not in any way a bad man. The whole story felt preachy, and the outcome was exactly what was obviously gonna happen since chapter 1. Parts of it were entertaining, but overall it's not a book that I would recommend.
