As a victim of DV from two separate relationships, I think this series is outstanding. In both cases I was emotionally abused, rather than physically abused, and this drama repeatedly reduced me to tears. Margaret, as Alex, is mesmerising. Her portrayal perfectly demonstrates the damage done to victims by way of manipulation, coersion and control. Andie McDowell is excellent as Alex's mentally ill, drug-popping, hippy mother; Billy Burke shines too, as Alex's flakey, abusive father. Repeatedly let down by every single person who should be there for her, Alex's resilience and determination to free herself and her daughter from the cycle of abuse, is painful to watch, as she's faced with brick walls at every turn. Family, employers, friends, all fail her over and over again.
I'm now watching episode 10, and I really don't know if there will be light at the end of the tunnel. The law, the system, the significant adults are all seemingly against the protagonist. I'm willing her to have a happy ending.
If you want to watch a fantastically written drama, which has lighter moments amongst the highly charged, emotionally dark ones; if you want to feel something real, then this is a series you shouldn't miss.
