Sweet Distractions, the 6th solo studio album by Skales is a sound of triumph and celebrations. The 14 tracked body of work opens with a happy chants and “sweet” melodies while the singer assures himself “everything is gon be alright” leading a joyous adlibs and reminisced on the hard days: his mother’s illness, financial strains, drug abuse et cetera, not forgetting the good days and his optimism of a brighter tomorrow.
The album has done well in maintaining a happy tone and the theme is well defined with the title “sweet Distractions” as Skales had faced couple of challenges and as human we always sort out pain killers to our troubled souls which a handful of songs on this album celebrate and attributed to inter-relations, parties and vacations “don’t take this life too seriously/ hit the dance floor make we dance kpakurukpa”, illicit and toxic relationships “Pants On Fire” and success in one’s career path all work together to get one’s mind off bad situations he should be brooding about.
The album though running less than an hour covers many subjects such as open relationships, drug abuse, unfaithfulness in a relationship, lust, love and marriage, failure, success and it wouldn’t be the Shake It Master if no booty is mentioned. And the singer sure sets his aim for greater heights “Katapot” and is hopeful all his dreams and happiness is achievable.
Skales displays his versatility on the album rapping, singing and torching genres outside his scope including the irresistible South African Amapiano and rightly placed adlibs.
This might not be Skales’ best work but he’s done quite well in maintaining a good product output with a star studded features from Davido “This Your Body”, Blaqbonez “Pants on Fire”, Zlatan and Krizbeats “Selense”, Rotimi “Rosa”, Stonebwoy “Leave Me Breathless” Zoro “Katapot” and more quality input from miscellaneous features.
“Sweet Distraction” enjoys production contribution from ace and trendy Nigerian producers and sound engineers like Yung Willis, Krizbeatz, Jay Pizzle, Echo, Eardrumz and many more.
The language of the album is straight and comprehensible: English, Pidgin, Yoruba and popular slangs. For consumer safety the language is X rated.
Personally I prefer albums running longer in times of duration but it might be Skales’ plot to make us wanting more and the songs though “sweet” run short and for the collaboration I will say too many features 8 out of 14 that’s quite a big number.
The artwork is simple and depicts Skales in two persons the real Skales and the animated (cartooned) with different hue layers set against a cloudy background.
Having compared all facets of the album and I so much enjoying the grooves will rate “Sweet Distraction” album 5.5 Stars / 10 stars. A good rating for an awesome performance.
