The poor reviews of this book completely miss the point of the book. While it's true that the narration takes a little getting used to at the beginning due to the changing timelines, once you get past that, you realise why it has to be that way. The timelines are meant to parallel one another so that characters can be juxtaposed against one another. On the flipside, the heavy use of music may seem overwhelming but its role is not to be viewed as music on its own but as a symbol of both respite, oppression, freedom, and resistance -- themes that are central to the story. One of the most heartfelt, thought-provoking and beautifully written books I've read in a while. Not the easiest read but would highly recommend if you are willing to sit down and fully immerse in it.
