The first part of the book is very interesting. McCullough chooses to tell the story through two main characters Cutler and Putnam. After 200 pages, the story of the pioneers of Marietta has been told and the main characters have died.
But 200 pages is not enough for a book. So something needs to be added. It now quickly slides off and ripples on with the personal and political affairs of Cutler's son and his family and a few other figures. But the power of the pioneers has completely disappeared. Too bad the book should have ended just in time.
