The movie is a work of art, carefully and respectfully interwoven with the brutal and sensitive realities of partition. It has served a multifaceted function, I saw it for the first time as child and though I was too young to understand the delicate history behind calling myself a Pakistani, I felt the pain of this biographical depiction through the wet eyes of my parents watching it with me. I saw it again as a teenager and was swayed with emotions of pride and enlightenment. As an adult, especially in this doubtful time of identity crisis for anyone who has any affiliation with Pakistan, one can keep coming back to this movie to have one's burning questions answered. Should Pakistan have existed? Was it a wasteful gamble? Who and what are we? Was Mohammad Ali Jinnah the immortal hero we have all grown up idealizing or another human just like us, striving and fighting hard for a cause he believed in so desperately? He wasn't perfect, he dealt with grief and loss just like the rest of us, he sacrificed so much of his own life for a greater cause, he bled just like a human being and had to face his destiny. He had his misgivings and regrets. But don't we all?
Highly recommend.
