I’ve read the novel since I was young, I’d say the film is quite different from its original novel, although with the same background. Many people say it’s portraying a different culture than Hollywood films, well, in some extent, it tried, it elaborated international cooperation rather than individualism, which is good. But on the other hand,it still fell in the track of individualism by letting couple of individuals save the whole world, not completely differing itself from Hollywood yet. Speaking of logic, there is still some aspects need urgent fixing. For example, to light Jupiter, you don’t have to shoot a long fire and connect it with an explosion to make it work. You just throw the international station into Jupiter and the job is done. Of course if we wanna be thoroughly logical, such a shock wave would probably tear the earth into parts, but that’s less obvious. There is still another problem of this film which’s always the main problem of Chinese movies, the characters and what they say. The captain ‘s son is one example. He wanted to be defiant, but the lines were really awkward. The sentiment between father and son wasn’t depicted well. How stupid would a son be not to understand his father wanted to save his life by stopping saving the mom? The editor should think deeper into that other than follow the same ugly tradition of bringing out a stupid character. Other than those, this is still a great effort for Chinese movies, sound visual effects and creative storyline, nice job.
