I don't mind scientific inaccuracy, to a point. Procedural inaccuracy is somewhat more irritating, but I can forgive a certain amount. Complete ignorance of the realities of important space missions - that really gets up my nose.
Most weird of all, the crew's friends, family and kids can call them any time, using a standard mobile phone. No worries about data capacity, the illogicality of using a cellphone on a spaceship to Mars, the fact that crew need to be performing SCIENCE on this first-ever mission, not dealing with kids failing their school exams, or missing their secret lover. Oh, and no time delay to make calls awkward. Sheesh.
The ship is HUGE. Massive amounts of metal and massive interior spaces to fill with air that has to be scrubbed of CO2. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Heavy, impractical, costly. Won't EVER happen.
There are so many things wrong, I can't list them. I've just got to the point where they're hanging up tinsel around the darned spaceship because it's Christmas. WEIGHT people. This is a crucial first mission to Mars, every gram of weight needs to be for survival and science, and tinsel really doesn't qualify. I feel like walking away. I can't believe I'm reading reviews praising the accuracy of the representation of space travel. Gobsmacking.
Please, writers, don't do this kind of rubbish. Write something at least practical, responsible, sensible, with a hint of a possible reality. This is just a kitchen sink drama with space used to distance people for convenient crisis deveopment..
