Wonderful book! I was born in 1950 so it almost coincides with when ‘now’ began for me personally. It is a delightfully-written collection of historical anecdotes from the year 1947, month by month with much attention to detail. I only wish that it had been published before the deaths of my own parents, whom I could have engaged in discussion on the many stories which took place in their young days. It reminds of a similarly constructed book which deals month by month with the year 1913, on the cusp of and not the end of that other World War - ‘1913 der Sommer des Jahrhunderts’ by Florian Illies (Fischer Taschenbuch) which may only exist in German language.
