It's just another Matrix sequel...
Now let me preface this all. I adore the original. But I'm an originalist because everything after Matrix 1 was meh to me.
I went in with an open mind.
I even watched the movie TWICE before writing this review.
But this movie is sadly, just another failed Wachoski attempt at catching lightning in a bottle.
The acting was great, I can't say I saw any one who didn't own their role.
The writing, directing, and reliance on CGI over practical fight scenes were... Just meh.
The first half actually was slow, overly meta and self aware at times, I feel they mocked the fact this movie was MADE at all. It really hurt the pace of what should've been an emotional "Welcome Back" for long time fans since it wasn't written to be a reboot to bring in new fans. (If it WAS, god it was poorly written then)
The second half actually picked up enough that I found myself enjoying a tinge of nostalgia. Feeling like I was young and back in school when I first watched the trilogy, and greeting long lost friends in our heroes.
My biggest issue is the poor writing. It just didn't do justice to an attempt at a new entry in the series given how long it's been.
The strongest part of the movie was the actors owning their roles. Even if it was just another poor Matrix entry.
In my opinion? Unless you have HBO already, wait for it to be cheap and convenient to watch. Spend the ticket money rewatching the original.
