This show reminds me of America’s beginning when whites stole Africans and bought them to America and forced them into slavery. African women were raped, beaten, tortured ny slave master’s wives, and many times bared children with the slave masters and were seen as nothing more than cattle. One of the biggest differences in the Handmaid’s Tale is that the “slaves” are mostly white women (handmaids & servants). In the beginning I liked June’s character, but as the series goes on and shows flashbacks of her character, you learn that she was a side chick to her light skin black man and she stole a black woman’s husband and a had a biracial child whose hair she doesn’t even attempt to style. This show is definitely a binge watcher, but as a black woman watching there are definitely lots of cringe worthy moments that remind me that all this pretty much happened already and that June’s experience is identical to a black women’s life during the slavery period.
