Imagine watching a film about a man walking around his neighbours house. Then every 2 minutes someone pauses the film and explains for an hour another characters backstory. Got halfway through and gave up, the whole book was about 90% backstory. The result of this is the very opposite of tension. This book needs to write in the now with creativity instead of describing the past with embellishment. It goes beyond scene setting and verges on describing the history of each stone and blade of grass.
