My Dad was an extra in the movie and good friend of Corey. His comments about Rooney and Corey were that their on screen personas were exactly as they were off camera. Rooney who was supposedly an assistant in directing completely took over the entire picture. Because of Cory's acute alcoholism, Rooney threw the scripts out the proverbial window. There is a scene when Rooney is reading his mail to Cory. There is no script, the exchange is completely ad lib. Look closely at there faces, Cory is three sheets to the wind, and Rooney is just being Rooney. Mickey Rooney was nominated for an academy award and Cory died a few years later from cirrhosis of the liver. My Dad's comments,"They had a charm about them, two of the nicest guys you'd ever meet, within three minutes of conversation, it would be as if you'd known them for your entire life."
