Shannon's character is so burnt out from.years of.dealing with people who can't see their.own worth, and he's nostalgic for.a time when his society, and his community made sense and had meaning and.purpose. Combined with the senseless, tragic death of his wife, he has lost everything. He knows the preacher.is a fake, but he sees.in Valentin the embodiment of the causes of his grief. He just doesn't care anymore who is guilty of what, by theyre all guilty of something. The preacher is.also vastly empty, driven to act and constantly stunned by his own emotional.and physical violence. He is exhausted by his struggle as a sinner. When he finally confesses, he regains his humanity.
