I encourage people to research derogatory history of race film in Hollywood. Eddie Murphy's performance was great. But, this film was nothing more than a magical negro film. Black people are only offered these roles cause the studio long for the days when marginalized people of color catered to white people. From: Gone with the Wind, Imitation of Life (30s), Imitation of Life (50s), Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, Driving Miss Daisy, Bagger Vance,The Green Mile, The Help, and Mr. Church. I'm sure I missed some demeaning movies along the way. But, these films are vile relics that just won't go away. Mr. Church's boss lends him out to serve his ill mistress and her awful bigoted fresh mouth kid for six months. After the woman succumb to her illness, Mr. Church, for whatever unknown reason winds up being a caretaker to said woman's vile daughter and later grandchild. I am more than confident that the white woman Susan McMartin who wrote this disgustingly offensive BS script doesn't know any black people. This trash script of hers is a damn feel good script/movie for white people. The same thing for equally tone death garbage filmmaker Bruce Beresford of Driving Miss Daisy fame. This trash collector filmmaker doesn't know a damn thing about Black people. Eddie doesn't realize it yet, but he became a younger version of Morgan Freeman with film. I'm reminded of a line in the movie The Help, when the maid found out the woman she worked for listed her in her Will to work for her daughter after she died. In a sense, this long-term service is carried out in this film. Anyway, in the right filmmakers' care this film could've been a decent film minus the many tropes.
