[Slight story and dungeon theme spoilers for those who haven’t played yet]
I’ve owned the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii since 2013, but only started playing it recently. And not too long ago I beat the game. Let me just say, the overall experience was just amazing. The story was absolutely magical and is the best in the whole franchise in my opinion. Every character in this game has so much personality, especially Link. This is the only Zelda game where we really see Link having human emotions, rather than him just being stone-faced throughout games like Breath of the Wild. I also love how he and Zelda were close friends before the events of the game took place. It gave him the motivation to take on the duty of being a hero, because it meant not only saving the world from destruction, but also saving a person who’s close to him. This makes the game so much better, because it feels like you’re actually fighting to save someone you love.
Besides this, almost everything else was just exceptionally well made. The side quests were fun, and working to find all the goddess cubes and getting all the prizes from them is so satisfying. Exploring the Faron Woods, Eldin Volcano, and Lanayru desert occupied me for hours because there is just so much to see and do. Some of the dungeons in the game were so creative. For example, a stolen pirate ship overran by monsters, an abandoned mining facility, and even a secret chamber inside of the Goddess statue which you never would’ve thought had a dungeon. The bosses for the dungeons were also very creative and well put together. The graphics for this game are really pretty to look at, which is nice for a 2011 game. And even though Fi was annoying at times, in the end she is still a loyal, lovable companion.
There are a few downsides however. For one, the things you do to progress with the story does feel repetitive after a while. It’s pretty much the same thing for a while; you learn a song, play that song to open up a trial, complete trial and get an item, make your way to the dungeon, repeat. Another thing that I didn’t enjoy were the Silent Realms. It was stressful being under a time limit, and if you messed up you’re forced to start all over again. And the fact that you have to do four of them was very tedious. One more thing is that if you’re playing the Wii version, like I did, the controls can get really annoying.
Despite the flaws, overall, saying that this game is incredible feels like an understatement. It’s by far my favorite in the entire franchise. It’s a shame that it’s not as popular as it should be, because it truly is a wonderful experience.
