5/10. It would work better as a movie than as a series. The protagonist ,Tony, wasn't very likable, but having a character like this was refreshing and worked to an extent. Episodes 2 and 3 are frustrating to sit through because it seems that all of the interactions between the characters seem to solely exist to unsubtly emphasize that Tony is depressed about his dead wife. After the first episode, I already gathered that. Besides some moments within the first 3.5 episodes, Tony's emotional journey appears, overall, pretty stagnant. During this stagnation I wanted to know more about the other characters like Sandy (in general), how Lisa's death affected her brother, Lisa's explicit feelings towards dying, etc. But they were kinda glossed over.
That being said, the series picks up midway through episode 4 and it is genuinely rewarding. The comedy is hilarious. The commentary is a little heavy handed, but still thought provoking. We get a glimpse into the lives of the other characters and Tony's personal growth becomes interesting to watch.
If you’re interested in watching a widower whose angry at the world (that also has an adorable dog), I’d say UP executed that premise better.
