As with many movies today, the sound editing was a problem, with the soundtrack, and in particular the continued overuse of Hollywood’s “wailing woman” throughout the movie being overwhelmingly loud. This made much of the dialogue (especially the use of lots of whispering) being drowned out and incomprehensible. Granted I forgot to wear my hearing aids, which is probably good because even without them the volume of the soundtrack was sometimes painful to my ears. As a result, it was harder to follow the more nuanced aspects of the movie and figure out what was going on and therefore give an informed opinion of the movie.
Why can’t Hollywood get back to giving more prominence to dialogue so viewers can better follow movies and shows better? I know even younger viewers opt for captions on their TVs, so I know it’s not a just problem for us seniors and hearing impaired people. Of course, this means you miss much of the visual part of the movie.
My advice is to wait till the movie hits streaming services so you can turn on the captions and follow the plot better.
So my review for Dune 2 is largely a question mark, because of how much I missed.
Maybe we should just go back to silent films until Hollywood gets over its obsession with high tech sound effects.
