I’m a CRPG enthusiast and as such I am typically highly critical of these games, holding them to the standard set by the original Baldur’s Gate series (which I consider to be the best series in video game history).
Wrath of the Righteous takes on this mantle and does so very well. I’m about 10 hours in and I’m amazed by the depth of character creation, and the extremely wide variety in gameplay and story options. Even this early, the companions in my party are demonstrating depth to their characters and laying the foundations toward becoming associates that I can see easily becoming heavily invested in as the game progresses.
The combat is deep and tactical, though by no means simple. This is certainly a “thinking man’s” game - not the type where you shut your mind off during a session. Really perfecting combat and strategy will likely require some study and research away from the game itself, but thankfully there are many websites and YouTubers who produce that type of content specifically for this game.
I will return to update this if I encounter anything significantly negative as I proceed through my playthrough, but I’ve played enough of these games that I feel I have a good handle on what’s to come. 10 hours in and I’m certainly just getting started, but already the foundations are laid for fantastic things to come.
Easy 5 stars.
