While not perfect, this movie had a great heart, premise and promise. As an allegory, it was really refreshing to see a movie take on concepts such as colonialism, wealth inequality, and above all, artistic expression and commercialization. If you want to see aliens being laser blasted or even teenagers in love overcoming extraterrestrial domination, you're out of luck. I'm glad the movie didn't go that path. Normal people are always more interesting.
However, the many details of the near-dystopia were the best part for me. What will food, high schools, and jobs look like when a 'benevolent' overlord upends our economy? Will you join them as servants, entertainment, or propaganda? Or will you defy them in the spirit of human perseverance and resistance? Great questions for a movie that proves we still have some artistic outlet where they can be asked and explored.
