The game is solid. Before I write my honest review, I wanted to point out that I read a lot of the negative comments related to the “button mashing” combat. What I didn’t realize until about halfway through the game (because I thought the same thing), is that the game has you immediately gain access to a ring that has the ability to do exactly that, press square and it automatically attacks in complex combinations and also automatically dodges. I haven’t read about it yet, but I imagine based on the amount of cutscenes it’s really to give the bots who are new to FF the ability to simply coast with little difficulty and get immersed into the storyline. So for those of you who were complaining about that I’m willing to bet most of you have that ring on.
Here’s why it doesn’t get a 4 or 5 from me. Far too many cutscenes. Open world doesn’t just mean sometimes, or depending on where you are in the plot, or able to access random dessert land with no actual loot or purpose for it. So it’s open world but they’ve built the game so that you get no reward for exploring. No hidden plots, powerful gear, literally nothing. Lol so you end up just playing the main storyline making the game feel very dull and repetitive. The story is decent, but then gets layered and repetitive. There isn’t like a main villain that anyone cares about. More like several villains that you equally care very little about. Lastly, Clive is way too overpowered. Out of the entire game I died maybe once and it was because I was distracted or ego challenged instead of healing. Otherwise, it’s not challenging at all. I can’t remember a FF game where combat with main bosses felt this easy. Like I’m never worried in a fight. No party either. To be honest I prefer FF15 over this. I would trade the storyline being non existent in FF15 to get back the open world feel and enhanced combat (and party).
I say all this and will admit I’ve enjoyed it which is why I didn’t give it a 1 or 2 star. It’s worth playing, it just pales in comparison to my two favourite which is FF7 and FF15.
Happy gaming..
Cheers
