One of the most insipid and boring movies I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching. Meaningless characters that were introduced for no discernible reason and who did nothing to advance the weak story line. Liv Tyler’s role was just embarrassing. Reduced to three vapid, whiney “cameos” and a doe eyed, pathetic, role as the victim of an indifferent husband. She deserved better. The movie was full of “filler”. Story lines such as the EVA to answer a distress signal from a research vessel, and the events taking place in said vessel, had absolutely nothing to do with overall plot of the movie. The film was riddled with such fillers. Donald Sutherland’s character was introduced for what turned out to be a meaningless interaction with Brad Pitt’s character. The last we see of Sutherland he’s apparently suffering from a heart attack and we are left with no resolution. Did he die? Did he recover? What the hell was he doing in the movie in the first place? War zones on the moon? Why? Who? For what? Pirates? Really?!?
The whole set up on Mars was ridiculous. The ominous presence of “they” - the government (?) - hovering over the ridiculous premise that was the “mission”. The dangerous “pluses”, so dangerous civilization itself was facing extinction, explained only with the vague claim it was caused by “antimatter”.
Angst! Angst! And more angst. That pretty much sums up Pitt’s character.
Dull. Boring. Unresolved. Pretty much sums up the entire movie.
