Whilst I enjoyed the storyline, I was very frustrated by this book.
There was too much introspection on the part of the narrator (usually the ship) and attention to detail in conversations was excessive. Dialogue is always welcome, but here it was drifting and purposeless.
I felt particularly aggrieved that the most interesting elements of the story were left unexplained and unexplored, whilst the humdrum was dwelt upon with relish. In such a vein, the last fifth of the book was entirely unnecessary and simply appeared to exist in order to fill pages.
I appreciate that the book was an attempt to examine humanity under certain conditions, but this was missed, and instead we are presented with an aimless ramble with little actual humanity involved.
Nice work on the ecology of the various environments, but it wasn't enough to give the story a satisfying structure.
