This book is a bit of an iron fist in a velvet glove. It has a tender tone but packs an enormous punch. Cartwright skilfully weaves together important themes from the world of medicine, social policy and even philosophy and economics. She does this successfully through mastery of storycraft, and not just any story, she bravely uses her own. In doing so we see that her own long battle with mental health is in many ways parabolic of everyone’s story. This is a generous book and really deserves serious attention.
