What Keeps You Alive (2018) - Colin Minihan
If 2020 is a person, it’d be Jackie.
I finally finished watching What Keeps You Alive on #Netflix and I’m absolutely, 100 percent convinced that every couple should have a psych evaluation before tying the knot. Forget prenup, I need to know that I’m not marrying a psychopath.
What Keeps You Alive is one of those movies with a killer plot twist (no pun intended) that will make you think twice about “putting a ring on it”. Let’s be honest, if you’ve seen too many horror movies like me, you know better than spending the weekend in a cabin in the woods but if you’re a hopeless romantic, you also know that there’s nothing quite like falling in love and finding someone to spend the rest of your life with.
So, imagine spending a romantic getaway in a cabin located in the middle of nowhere with the love of your life. Sounds perfect, right? I mean, what could go wrong except maybe for the fact that this person turns out to be a cold-blooded psychopath that pushes you off a cliff to die… twice. This. is. basically. what this whole movie is about and I’m not even complaining because it’s so good.
The movie opens with a couple driving to a remote cabin where no one can hear you scream. Jules (Brittany Allen) and Jackie (Hannah Anderson) are celebrating their anniversary. Judging by the ominous music and muted colors, this movie will only get darker and darker. I mean, Jackie singing “there’s a demon inside me” sure raises a red flag. But then again, these two have been together for a year so who am I to question their relationship.
So, 25 minutes into the movie we see Jackie pushing Jules over the edge of a cliff to die. Now, this is where things start getting really interesting. Jules survives the fall and hides while Jackie searches for her in the woods. This isn’t exactly what both of them had in mind. Jules only wants to spend quality time with Jackie and Jackie killing Jules for the money. What follows next is a series of unexpected twists and turns to keep you hooked for an hour and 39 minutes. Side note: I honestly don’t remember the last time I held my breath watching a boat chase. Anyway, the biggest lesson here is, maybe it’s not such a good idea to date someone who knows how to hunt, especially a psychopath. I mean, what a combo, right?
The performances from both actresses were just crazy good that you find yourself drawn to their contrasting approach to their respective roles. Anderson as Jackie morphing into this crazy psychopath literally made my skin crawl. Allen as Jules and her transformation from prey to predator deserves to be rooted for.
What Keeps You Alive is unnerving and a little suffocating as it demands your full attention. It’s a great precautionary tale for anyone thinking about getting hitched because you never know, you might end up with a psycho. However, Jules sums it perfectly when she said, “And even though you can never really know what’s going on inside their head. You take the leap anyway and you hope for the best.” Sometimes, love just happens to make you look past all the signs until it’s too late.
