Terrible! We wasted 8 hours of our life with this because people said it was good and that it got better as you go. The fact that this show has mostly 5 star ratings is absolutely mind blowing. :)
Just because a show has great CGI, graphics, costume, and acting, that is NOT enough to make it an actually good show. The storyline had way too many holes in it, they were not able to weave everything together in a cohesive plot that actually made sense by the finale.
For example, they never explain why the child never decides to speak a single word until the 2nd to last episode, at which time he randomly starts to talk. Eventually, he decides to write a message down instead of speak it -- but why didn't he just do that in the first place? They never explain HOW the kid got stuck in the cupboard in the prometheus. They never explain why the portals under the beds inexplicably disappear sometimes, then reappear, and sometimes the brick portal is simply closed.
The beetle ended up being a completely inconsequential and unnecessary detail. There were a lot of things like this that we thought were going to be significant later on, but they just completely dropped it and never explained them at the end of the series.
All these un-explained details add up and create major flaws in the plot and storyline development. It all looks like lazy and rushed writing to me.
Toward the end of the series, they start throwing in electronic hand-held remote controls to make it super convenient like you can just make any character do whatever you want using that remote control. That makes it super convenient and comes off as lazy and sloppy plot writing.
Spoiler: when you find out at the end that the whole story is actually occurring in the future, and not in the year 1899, then why was the whole series called 1899 and marketed by Netflix as being a period-like piece? It ended up being a very matrix-like, futuristic series that has very little to do with the 1899 time period-- which is fine, but don't market the preview of the show as being a period piece that occurs in 1899.
The show definitely had potential and I see what they were trying to do, but it just fell short with all the plot holes and details, they were not able to tie it all together in a way that made sense. They really overcomplicated it with way too many sub-plots and details that were never explained, and were not necessary.
