This film defines 21st century horror.
James Wan is an incredible Horror producer and this film really highlights his skills like we've seen in the Conjuring, then later in the other Conjuring movies, and Insidious etc.
Firstly, Frank Grillo and Maria Bello did an amazing job with this film, there brilliant acting really balanced out the "cringey, low-budget" acting from the other cast members (sorry). Secondly, I loved the jump scares, possessions, CGI, people getting thrown across rooms, and sound effects (the perfect recipe for this genre), and finally, the plot was established early on in the beginning, and then took an unexpected and awesome twist towards the end. It was a good film, however, it isn't the best horror film I've seen. The PoV cinematography is unoriginal, and the writing wasn't well thought out, especially towards the end of the film, it was here where things started to feel rushed. The plot twist was perfectly executed, but I felt as if I was watching an action film rather than a horror, but I was left wanting more so I guess that's a good thing!
Overall, the film was not too scary which is perfect in my opinion, to many jump scares can ruin a decent horror film and there was a fine balance here. This is an almost perfect horror film.
I recommend this film if you are looking for a decent horror movie.
