I saw the West End musical version years ago- which was excellent. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to see it again in movie form- but my family and I decided to go. We were very glad we did! A wonderfully entertaining, heartwarming, and at times gut punching show. All the flowers go to Cynthia’s charismatic performance -just top class. Ariana Grande did a fantastic job too- but for me Cynthia was simply the best!

The 2 stars are for all the actors who had to throw themselves into this project. The best actor imo-was the young girl who gave a natural performance . What would have been great is if the main protagonist had gone to the audiologist- who would have then said something about low frequencies that few people can hear-and researched the source- the end! The rest of the narrative about cult followers and their opportunistic con-artist cult leaders had some interesting points to make about how people who are vulnerable can be susceptible to manipulation- that there- was an interesting kernel to explore- but it was too wrapped up in other parts that it lost its gut punch! I couldn’t stand the characterisation of the main protagonist-she was so irritating, selfish and in her words “reckless”- that I couldn’t care less what happened to her. And.. when do the police operating in a sleepy English village ever burst in or burst out into the garden and immediately shoot a bunch of people standing about in a garden- dead! Cos they should be up for murder charges!!
