I have been a Godzilla fan since I was a child. I own every film (American and Japanese). I also have every piece of literature on Godzilla. I will say this is the best movie aside from the original. Do not listen to the negative reviews!!! See this film, it's worth it because it offers such an experience.
This is not soley a love story...It is about a man's struggle towards forgiving himself and finding his courage through severe adversity. The same could be said of the country, as this takes place right after WW2 in Japan. It's about people coming together during extremely difficult times. Does anyone remember Sept 11th? Do you see what's going on in the world today? This movie sheds light on the horrors of war. Both the people and Godzilla being victims of egotistical governments.
It definitely focuses on the people, but Godzilla is more than just monsters fighting and destroying cities. It's about the people and how they deal with it. The monsters are metaphors of that chaos and destruction. Godzilla is given good screen time and his appearances are timed very well! Godzilla 2014 used a similar approach as did Shin Godzilla.
This movie gets everything right and is a master piece, in my opinion. I loved the Godzilla design and the musical score. The cinematography was brilliant and had a cool retro feel. The special effects were very good too. Acting was A plus!
Whether you're a life-long fan or new to this 70 year old franchise, you'll thoroughly enjoy this film. Plus, there's a happy ending! And I am hoping more movies will follow this one and begin a new series.
