This film is certainly not for the faint-hearted or the sensitive, due to its graphic scenes. I genuinely feel sorry if anyone has an uncomfortable experience watching it, but I would be even more disappointed if the film's value is underrated because of gore (a lot) and erotic scenes (a bit). However, if you can handle these aspects and are seeking a fresh and creative experience in the psychological horror genre, congratulations – this film is for you.
Visually and narratively, the film is truly outstanding. What I love most about it is the aspect of choice. From start to finish, the protagonist has complete control over whether to participate, continue, or put an end to their tragedy easily, which sets it apart from many horror films where the lead character is often forced into unfortunate circumstances. Even better, I found myself sympathizing with the character and never feeling frustrated by their actions – something I frequently experience when watching horror films where characters make frustratingly poor decisions just to drive the plot. The last 45 minutes of the movie build up one climax after another, driven by the protagonist's inner turmoil. It would be unfair to dismiss this part as merely “too gory” or “unnecessarily fast-paced.” Of course, I was continually impressed by the film’s visuals – incredibly creative, with stunning close-ups, lighting, and color schemes. Particularly, the shot through the mirror during the final A******ion left a lasting impression on me.
Moreover, the film does not end on an ambiguous note. The audience is allowed to witness the full consequences of the character's choices – a true and definitive ending, which is rare in modern horror films. The message the film conveys is also crystal clear, which I would summarize as: "Love yourself for who you are, rather than reflecting the crowd's opinions."
I truly hope this film finds great success both in the cinema world and in academic awards.
P.S. I'm not someone who easily remembers faces and names, especially of Hollywood actors, but after watching this film, I don’t think I’ll ever forget the name Demi Moore. She was exceptional, and I can't imagine being as talented and dedicated as she is at her current age. And of course, I must also acknowledge the makeup team – it would be a huge oversight not to mention their incredible contribution to the film.
