For years I’ve watched and loved this movie. It’s a Christian movie about forgiveness and restoration. Or so I thought. But it is all wrong.
Recently I had the Stunning realization: Fireproof is a horrible movie. It blames the victim and sets up such a false picture of healing and restoration. The wife is the villain for being hurt and unable to instantly forgive, subconsciously making porn an easy to forgive sin and not that bad within marriage. It communicates to all spouses that they need to instantly trust and forgive and to not do so makes them the relationship destroyer. That 40 days is enough time to undo and rebuild the destruction of the most sacred and intimate relationship. Those who produced and worked on it clearly never dealt with it and have a skewed theology and poor view of trauma, betrayal and healing.
