No one could ever fill the shoes of Robin Williams in any role. His improv and off the cuff remarks and attitude, mixed with voices, and his 1000 mph approach is one of a kind. I would have rather seen a comedian who can pull of some of these than Will Smith. Don't get me wrong, Will Smith is incredible and I think just about everyone in the world has love for Will Smith, but the character of the Genie is so defined by Robin Williams' portrayal that taking it into another direction is actually more of a distraction. A Jim Carrey may have been a bit better, but if it were up to me, I would have taken the countless hours of dialogue Robin Williams recorded during the original movie and fully CG'd the Genie. It would have felt much more authentic.
