This is an underappreciated album that I hope more people check out some day. Its tracklist has a satisfying blend of compositions overflowing with Squarepusher's signature erratic beats, speedy basslines, and catchy melodies. That said, it is rather different from a lot of his work, and a bit harsh on the ears if you aren't ready for it.
Ufabulum is primarily characterized by its cold, airy, metallic, and often abrasive feel. It's entirely electronic, very erratic, and unapologetically loud. It's all incredibly cohesive, and the tracks all vary enough to keep things interesting, but your enjoyment of it will depend on how well you gel with this specific atmosphere and tone, because it's prevalent throughout.
The ecstatic, hyper mood of many songs near the start of the album contrasts wonderfully with the screeching metallic grinds and dour drones that accompany some of the more menacing compositions in the latter portion - with the final track tying everything together into a powerful conclusion. At 10 tracks and 51 minutes, it doesn't feel too short or too long either.
You have to be a fan of loud, sometimes unpleasant noises, constantly-transforming leads and beats, and an icy, machinic sonic atmosphere to really get the most out of it. But if you do happen to like all these things (like me), then Ufabulum is a near-perfect combination of all those elements.
