As a fan of science fiction I was looking forward to watching this, as the premise seemed interesting. But I didn’t even make it through the first episode. It is completely unwatchable. No government would send this bunch of squabbling, arguing twenty-somethings on the most important mission in human history. They should have called it Big Brother In Space. 20 minutes in and the crew of the ship decides to mutiny because their leader doesn’t want to take a greater than 10% chance of getting them all killed before they even get to their destination to save a couple months on a 6+ month trip. There are no uniforms so they can show a bunch of young hardbodies running around the spaceship in their underwear, but only the women, of course. Then there is the LGBTQ man/boy who is supposed to be the ships doctor, but barely looks old enough to a graduated high school much less medical school . And the whining twentysomething girl with a ton of attitude who opines that anybody over 27 is useless. Every scifi trope from every bad movie ever made, all in the first episode.
As with most Netflix productions, the production value was good, and the ship was nice to look at. Katee Sakoff is trying hard, but she has this “what am I doing here” look throughout most of the first episode. Samuel Anderson gives a good performance playing the AI interface. If you want to see more of him I recommend season 8 of Dr Who where he plays Danny Pink, a much better use of your time than watching this garbage. The rest of the performances were mediocre or worse. Probably the least believable is the guy who played the previous captain of the ship. I can’t imagine any organization in history giving Earth’s only FTL spaceship to this guy. First he talks about how levelheaded and stable he is, and then he sticks a tranquilizer into Katie‘s neck and throws her into stasis as he and the crew mutiny. Sure, that’s how it would work. But don’t worry about Katee. While I didn’t watch past that point I’m sure some horrible thing happens as a result of his bad judgement that forces the crew to wake up Katie so she can save the day and be captain again.
Seriously, just skip this one.
