This is a movie about being saved. When a person passes away too soon, or unexpectedly before their time, they can save someone else who is having a spiritual conflict with another spirit, who then has a spiritual transformation and becomes more like a brother of the person that saved them. Then I guess how long that person lives depends on how compatible their spirit “fits” with their new lifestyle of the person they save, and a lot of times it helps them become a better person. It makes me wonder if it’s ever happened like this, someone knows someone that passed away, then meets someone later that was saved at the same time. The football injury/recovery is just a metaphor for Joe fixing that spiritual conflict, and Joe coming back to life in his new body, and she can see part of the Joe she fell in love with. It makes me wonder what would happen if they married. Would it release Joe’s old spirit, and make him become less like the Joe she fell in love with and more like the football player she never really knew before, or does he become more like the old Joe, with the new body, and make their love stronger? I hope I can find out someday!
