My all time favorite movie. For one reason, Joseph Cotton was one of my favorite actors.
But the main reason is because I was in Germany, not to far from Vienna, 11 years after the war. The infrastructure in many of the smaller places had not been rebuilt, bombing rubble was still there and the black market flourished. This movie is so authentic in every way and brings back many memories.
But aside from the personal aspects, it is a great story with wonderful actors and that fabulous zither music. I don’t know if it has been colorized, I hope not. I love the black/white.
For younger persons who might see this movie, it is so authentic in all ways, it could have been filmed in real time, down to the round light switch and the kiosks which were everywhere; I never realized they opened until I saw this movie.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it, even have my own copy.
I love it.
I’ve read there was controversy at the time about the ending, some involved apparently wanted a different ending. I thought it was fitting.
